Why does the live reef food fish trade occur?
Compared to the more traditional, 'dead' fish trade, the live fish trade has the potential to provide fishers with larger profits. A fish kept alive for export is worth more in local and foreign markets though some studies have shown that only marginal profits are made by fishers. Due to the high demand for live reef fish for food from consumers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China, fishers are attracted to participate in this fishery.
Are the impacts caused by the live reef food fish trade related to other issues that affect coral reefs?
Yes, activities associated with the live reef food fish trade are often linked to other issues that affect the health of local coral reefs. To better understand how live reef food fish trade is related to, but different from, other issues, refer to this Flowchart Diagram | | | Commercial species barramundi cod, Cromileptes altivelis.
