|Why does aquarium fishing occur?|
There are several reasons why aquarium fishing occurs worldwide. Fishers are already skilled in their trade and need only to change the type of gear and methods they use to capture fish to participate in the marine ornamental trade. Another reason why fishers participate in aquarium fishing is the larger economic benefits that can be gained from keeping fish alive and selling them to aquarium dealers. Lastly, the general lack of local management of reef resources is an additional reason why unsustainable aquarium fishing practices continues.
Are aquarium fishing impacts related to other issues that affect coral reefs?
Yes, aquarium fishing activities are often linked to other issues that affect the health of local coral reefs. To better understand how the marine ornamental trade is related to, but different from, other issues, refer to this flowchart.
